It makes sense that skin roughness and wrinkling is proportionate to the amount of water in our skin. Moisturizers are formulated to deal with this problem through various mechanisms. One very simple way is provide an occlusive coating to the skin with substances that are heavy and greasy such as petrolatum. Another more complicated strategy is to accelerate the exfoliation of old dry skin with a product such as an alphahydroxy acid (AHA) to yield the new skin underneath.

The Problem

As our skin ages, lipid production in the deeper layers begins to decline. The skin becomes more prone to excessive water loss and the resulting undesirable changes such as dryness, wrinkling and roughness. Without these important lipids, many normal skin processes are impaired. The skin becomes thinner, less tolerant to damage and begins to lose its elasticity. Other factors that adversely affect the processes of the skin are environmental and include smoking, poor dietary habits and over exposure to the sun.

Nourish the skin with a formulation that contains the necessary components to supply it the vital nutrients needed in the deeper layers of the skin.

This is an opposing strategy to just trying to keep moisture in with an occlusive such as petrolatum. It is also very different from inducing the forced replacement of new skin like AHAs do. These old strategies do not even attempt to correct the underlying problems that help lead to skin dryness, roughness and wrinkling.
